Volunteers donate 3800 hours of service each month

Volunteer

Volunteering at Urban Ministries of Durham is a great way to make a difference. Besides knowing that you are helping transform the lives of people in your own community, you may find even deeper rewards. Over 4,100 volunteers came through our doors last year, and over 700 of them were first-time volunteers with UMD.

Last fall, UMD received the Father George Mader Award from the Catholic Network of Volunteer Service, which honors organizations and individuals that encourage lay people to serve others in the United States and abroad.

Volunteer Opportunities

Community Café

Volunteers are needed to help prepare and serve breakfast and lunch on weekdays at the UMD Community Café. No prior experience is required. The minimum age is 15 years old (under 18 must be accompanied by an adult).  Most weekends and evenings are reserved by groups.  Please, no walk-ins.

Small groups of volunteers are needed to help clients with clothing items, as well as to sort and hang clothing. Local churches, civic organizations, or small groups of 2-3 volunteers are appreciated. Training is provided. Shifts are two and one half hours, 1:00-3:30 p.m. Help is especially needed on Mondays.

Shelter Assistants

We need friendly people to answer the telephone, and to greet and provide information to visitors and clients.  Volunteers will be oriented about Urban Ministries, and they will convey that information to the public. Volunteers are also needed to distribute supplies to residents, to assist staff, and to help monitor the shelter overnight.  Shifts of two hours or more are available weekdays, weekends and evenings.

Data Entry Volunteers

Volunteers with computer skills are needed to assist in keeping databases up to date. This work must be done at Urban Ministries, not in the volunteer's home. Two-hour or more shifts are available Monday through Friday.

Special Events

Volunteers are needed to help plan and organize special events throughout the year.

Contact Volunteer Coordinator Faye Morin at fmorin@umdurham.org or (919) 682-0538, ext. 25, to volunteer or learn more.
