THE NIELDS UMD BENEFIT CONCERT

Friday, November 5, at 7 PM

Sister Act Back In Town To Support Urban Ministries of Durham!

Usually Western Massachusetts-based sisters Katryna and Nerissa Nields (www.nields.com) play here during the sweltering July 4th Festival for the Eno River. We're fortunate that the Nields will experience some Carolina autumn with us. Performing as an acoustic duo in the climate controlled comfort of the St. Philip’s Episcopal Church Parish Hall in downtown Durham, these harmonic artists will share an evening of their smart songs an happy hooks Friday, November 5, at 7.

As darlings of the coffeehouse/festival scene since 1991, with tunes ranging from off-the-hook idiosyncratic to kicking to heartbreaking, the Nields’ newest and 14th career release, Sister Holler, serves up a "roots album," but with a difference. The sisters retooled, assimilated and flat out burgled the music they grew up with to create something new. They tell listeners right up front that they're even going to lift entire lines from some of the best songs ever written and then they do it, right before your very ears. The result of this reinvention is a musical oxymoron—simultaneously familiar and surprising songs.

Sister Holler demonstrates that it is possible to return to tradition while growing musically into new sounds. The rhythm section from the Nields' former eponymous five-piece band remains the same, with Dave Chalfant on bass and Dave Hower on drums. Although now banjos, accordions and mandolins take up where hot electric guitar leads and folk-rock attitude left off. The other significant difference between now and then is that both Nerissa and Katryna have become mothers, the presence of children in the house bringing with it a desire for greater musical directness.

It serves to reason, then, that children are welcome at the Nields show on Friday, November 5, and at all Strings Attached shows held in the St. Philip's Parish Hall. We have childcare for younger ones and great live music for the rest. Tickets remain $15 in advance ($20 at door) and $8 for youth (available securely online at www.stphilipsdurham.org via PayPal with a small convenience charge; make checks payable and sent to Strings Attached Productions 403 E Main St, Durham NC 27701). Tickets paid for in advance will be available at the "will call" table at 6:30 PM on the evening of the concert, Friday, November 5. For more information, visit www.stphilipsdurham.org, email StringsAttachedDurham@gmail.com or call 919-682-5708.

All Strings Attached profits benefit Urban Ministries of Durham.

The recently launched free bus line, Bull City Connector, stops steps from St. Philip's, so concert attendees wishing to enjoy refreshments, including wine and beer from downtown good neighbors Triangle Brewing Company, can easily navigate between Duke, 9th Street and Golden Belt without worrying about driving. For those who do wish to drive, easy, free, monitored parking is available.

Additionally, Friday, November 12, Strings Attached partners with the Cat's Cradle in Carrboro to co-produce a UMD benefit with Amy Ray (Indigo Girls) and her rock band featuring Durham's Mel York on drums, former Durhamite Kaia Wilson on guitar, Greensboro's Greg Griffith on bass and Julie Wolf on keys and buttons. Mount Moriah (Durham's Heather McEntire and Jenks Miller) will also perform, playing first.
