Operation Clean Sweep-Jani King

Clean Sweep offers high quality cleaning services at affordable prices to businesses and congregations in Durham, North Carolina. The services offered range from comprehensive floor care (cleaning, polishing, waxing, stripping), carpet care (vacuuming, shampooing) to general office cleaning (trash removal, dusting, bathroom cleaning, fixtures cleaning & polishing).

Clean Sweep is performed by a crew consisting of graduates of UMD’s Hope Recovery (for men) and Believe (women) programs, who are recruited based upon peer review and personal accountability history in the programs. During the 6-9 months of the Recovery program, in return for the program services and free room and board, candidates provide janitorial services in the UMD facilities. To prepare them for fulfilling these responsibilities, candidates receive formal training in Best Practices for Janitorial Services that have been established for cost control rationale.

Clean Sweep fulfills two different yet complementary goals:

1) Social goal - to complement UMD’s mission of providing emergency services by fostering the reentry of recovering addicts into the community by offering them a crucial missing link: a chance to demonstrate a positive work history through stable employment as they strengthen their recovery.

2) Financial goal - as the competition intensifies for charitable funding, this venture promises to generate a stable source of earned income to support UMD’s other charitable programs, thereby strengthening the fiscal foundations of the organization.
