Community Café

The Community Café serves three meals a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year to shelter residents and anyone else in need of a meal. The welcoming Café area is a popular gathering place, and it is also used for community building and enrichment programs. Volunteers provide over 90% of the labor to prepare the meals, and community partners donate over 90% of the food. In the summer of 2012, to help clients find and keep jobs, we changed our lunch service to a more convenient packed lunch that clients pick up during breakfast time and take wherever their day may lead them. On Thanksgiving and Christmas, we will offer special noontime meals in the cafe.

In fiscal year 2011-2012, the Community Café served 230,501 meals.  The Café serves an average of 630 meals per day.

The Café hours are as follows:

Monday-Friday

  • Breakfast and bag lunch pickup 8–9 a.m.
  • Dinner 6:45-7:45 p.m.

Saturday

  • Breakfast 9:30-10:15 a.m.
  • Lunch in the cafe 12:30-1:30 p.m.
  • Dinner 6-7 p.m.

Sunday

  • Breakfast 9:30 a.m.-10:15 a.m.
  • Lunch in the cafe 12:30-1:30 p.m.
  • Dinner 5:45-6:45 p.m.

We have so many regular meal serving groups that it's rare for us to have opportunities for new groups, but at the moment we have a surprising number of slots -- how would you and a group of 8 or 9 friends like to serve and/or cook a meal to neighbors in need? These July meals are open: Wed, 7/3 Dinner; Thu, 7/4 Dinner; Sun, 7/7 Lunch; Mon, 7/8 Lunch AND Dinner; Wed, 7/10 Breakfast; Fri, 7/12 Lunch.

Every one of our 140+ shelter guests takes a shower every night, and that takes a lot of towels! We wear them out quickly with so many uses and washings and have been running short lately.
